In 2019 Joshua Cheptegei became the world 10000m champion after winning gold at the world athletics championships in doha Qatar.
Before this victory, Cheptegei had won gold in 10,000m and 5,000m races at the 2018 common wealth games in gold coast australia.
On sunday the youthful athlete won another world championship in a 10,000m race at the on going world championships in Oregon USA. He also claimed a silver medal in the 5000m and a 10,000m gold at the 2020 tokyo olympics.
Now the world champion will return to the field in the 5000m race on Thursday. Cheptegei says he is eager to win medals in both races. This was during his training in kapchorwa. He said that he treats the competition as a very special competition in his life. going in as a world record holder and the defending world champion, I have got to do my best and try to win the title again.
This is the second time Cheptegei is running on the same track in Oregon, the first was in 2014 for the world under 20 championships where he won a gold in the 10,000m. He says ” Competing in Oregon for my second championship is very important so I go in with the right mindset and with high hopes that I will bring back the title.
Cheptegei took part in the 2017 world cross championships in Kampala where he finished 30th due to a muscle pull and in the same year he won a silver medal in 10,000m race at the world athletics championships in london.
After this championships, the athletes are expected to take part in the common wealth games starting july 28th in birmingham england.
